Bioelectrical Impedance Spectroscopy has been used successfully in dialysis wards to measure the volume of fluid over-hydration to help determine dry weight, as well as in IC wards to assess nutritional status, recovery rate and hydration levels.
In addition, the MultiScan5000 may be used to detect malnutrition in patients with normal or high body fat. Body cell mass can easily be obscured by an expansion of extracellular fluid which will not be detected by looking at an overall increase in total body weight.
Using the Prediction MarkerTM you are able to monitor change in the condition of the body segment over a period of time.
Only the accurate raw Impedance measurement data at 5 kHz and 200 kHz is used to calculate the Prediction Marker.So this is independent of regression equations and therefore does not require the subjects weight, height, gender or age.
However, the important point to remember is that it is CHANGE in the marker that should be focused upon to determine the TREND over a period of time, either hours, days, weeks or months.

Using your MultiScan5000 couldn't be easier – no training is required and the whole process is completely non-invasive, important for the comfort of the patient. The Multiscan 5000 has two main cable leads of which each lead has two crocodile/alligator clips, red and black. These clips are attached to the exposed tabs on the electrodes. The patients' details are input using the pop-up on-screen alpha-numeric keypad so name of patient is immediately recorded on the device.
The measurement works by passing a safe battery generated signal through the body and measuring the bioelectrical impedance at a spectrum of 50 fixed frequencies from 5 kHz to 1000 kHz.
